Dear ABC Members, We are about ready to embark on a new era of technological innovation far greater than any other transformation in history — machine learning and artificial intelligence. Over the next few decades, technology will revolutionize construction and redefine the industry (and society) as we know it. Emerging Technologies to Watch
AI is set to become invaluable, predicting structural issues and optimizing building designs. It will generate and submit project estimates based on your company’s labor costs. Automation will handle tasks like bricklaying and painting, speeding up projects and cutting costs. Autonomous vehicles will enhance just-in-time delivery and safety. Robotic layout systems, like those from Dusty Robotics, can draw precise layouts on the construction site floor, indicating where walls and other structural elements should go. This technology improves accuracy and saves time compared to manual marking. No more chalk lines and laser levels. AR and VR are emerging tools with great potential. AR provides real-time data overlays, while VR offers immersive training for complex tasks. Modular construction, building sections off-site for quick assembly on-site, will reduce costs and build times. 3D printing will allow for the on-site creation of entire structures, transforming affordable housing and disaster relief. Smart materials, such as self-healing concrete and auto-tinting glass, will extend building lifespans and reduce maintenance. Empowering Tomorrow New cohort of Emerging Professionals begin their path to leadership
Emerging leaders from ABC member companies gathered in the Freedom Room at the end of May for the start of the 2024 Professional Development series. The series consists of six sessions, each focused on a specific topic future leaders should be familiar with. The opening session provided context for what ABC is and our mission, then transitioned to a deep dive into understanding individual personalities. Two long-time ABC members and owners of local contracting businesses, Robert Clancy and Luke Beach joined the group for the morning to share their expe riences with this association and why it’s important to make time to be involved. Robert Clancy, owner of Robert Clancy Contracting Inc., spoke about the integrity ABC members act with and the importance of keeping that at the forefront of the association. “Your name, your reputation is the most important thing you have. Protect that and act with integrity always,” Clancy said. “The public perceives merit shop workers to not value employee well-being, safety or operate with any code of ethics. I’m here to say that’s far from who we are. As we go through ABC National’s by-laws today, I want you all to understand the responsibility it is to be an

ABC member and wear that logo with pride.” Owner of Independence Commer cial Construction, Inc., Luke Beach, echoed what Clancy told the group. “We’re not here today to tell you all that we had a perfect path to opening our companies, but reputation is everything,” Beach said. “It’s not going to come down to if you make a mistake, it’s how you handle yourself when you do. That’s a person someone wants to do business with.” The last half of the session was led by Dr. John Mlinarcik, president at PCS-Global, a consulting and professional development firm. Dr. Mlinarcik led the group through their Behavioral Styles Profile assessment. This assessment broke down personality traits for each attendee and showed them how to become a strong leader by
enhancing their communication skills. “It’s an interesting fact that by age 10, our personality is locked in,” said Dr. Mlinarcik. “From there, we go on autopilot, never thinking about changing it through our habits and responses to different encounters in life. That can be hard as we enter the workforce because we know how we operate, but don’t often think about how others operate, which can cause a lot of tension.” The session was not lost on one participant who is eager to start this journey in his career. Curtis McElroy, an assistant project manager for Action Traffic Mainte nance, understands the reason his employer recommended him for the program and already is getting a positive impact on his career as he walked out of session one.

“Everyone that stood up and spoke in front of us conveyed themselves in a manner that I would person ally like to achieve one day, and that in itself inspired me, but also gave me some hope that there are kind people out there who are trying to make changes that benefit our country and other people, and ones that impact indi viduals in positive and productive ways. I thought it was an excellent first seminar,” McElroy said. From here, the Emerging Profes sionals are off to Lansing to meet with their local state reps and understand how politics affect the industry. The group will also be learning from a number of ABC SEMI members who are experts in law, safety, technology, strategic planning and leadership. With 54 merit shop-friendly legislators in the State House, we’re just two short of the number needed to halt the influx of detri mental legislation we’ve witnessed. In 2022, a mere 1,500 more votes could have secured our position at 56, ensuring a promising future for ABC members in Michigan.
ABC of Michigan spent countless hours interviewing candidates, discussing the races in over 60 of the state’s 110 State House districts, and has endorsed 61 candidates while also deciding to let a handful of races play out without an endorsement because several candidates in the race met the requirements to be considered a merit shop champion. ABC of Michigan recently released those publicly. We encourage you to find one of those candidates close to your region, reach out to them, and meet them yourselves. You can also write a check, knock on some doors, and make some phone calls. Never forget how close we were in 2022. One more door, one more phone call, and one more $20 check might change the outlook for our entire industry. At ABC of Michigan, we’ve devel oped a comprehensive campaign plan to invest over $200,000 into four of the most crucial districts in the state. These efforts, including polling, digital ads, and mail, are designed to make a significant impact. Your contribution to ABC of Michigan’s PAC or our Cor porate Action Fund will directly support and enhance these efforts. Thanks to the strong participation in our Legislative Day event, we’re well on our way to meeting our budget and expanding our reach to five or six districts. If you still want to contribute, there’s time to make a difference. Finally, ABC of Michigan will take a hands-on approach in key districts across the state. Oppor tunities to participate in group door-knocking days will pop up

Family moved them back home to Michigan, and soon thereafter, Luke started Independence Com mercial Construction, Inc. in 2008. Fast food restaurants kept them afloat during the downturn of the economy and since then what was started with four people remod eling McDonalds, has turned into a large operation that services restaurants, retail spaces, schools and multi-housing projects. We look forward to his leadership on the ABC Southeastern Board of Directors. Luke got his start in construction early on in high school in a building trades program before he found his way to Construction Education Trust, now known as SEMCA, to start his formal training. While at CET, he worked for Onslow-Sheffield, Inc. as an apprentice. While there, Luke was quickly connected to the ABC side during his training, making ties in the industry in SE Michigan. Upon completion of training, Luke and his wife spent a few brief years in Dallas, Texas where Luke opened his first construction business spe cializing in commercial interiors.
I look forward to growing our reach and awareness as an association in SE Michigan. I think our members have something to be proud to be a part of, and I can’t wait to be an ambassador for that.

Tad got his start in the industry through his family. Both of his grandfathers, three uncles and father owned construction compa nies, and Tad could not wait until his time came! Tad’s dad would sneak him into construction jobs on weekends and holidays when he was very young. He could drive a company truck the summer he turned sixteen and was given his own jobs and crew. Most recently Tad and his son Tye started TMX Contracting, a mechanical company, just three years ago. Family has been at the forefront of Tad’s career. He partners in a tree removal company with his

Mike Peake President Action Traffic Maintenance
Maintenance, a company that specializes in road signs, guardrail, drilled shaft foundations, high tension cable barrier and fencing. Mike and his team joined ABC recently to stay plugged in to industry changes and keep their competitive edge. He was pleased by the advocacy work to help his business, but also the drive for a safer industry. Mike mentioned that safety was always a part of the company, but ABC can provide more extensive resources and trainings to protect workers. Mike Peake is a devoted southeast Michigan resident. Born and raised in Holly, he started working in road construction at the age of 16 on the side, but little did he know the career that would be in store for him. After a short stint of working in construction up in Alaska, Mike moved home to start college classes on the side. Unsure if this was for him, he continued to work on the job site before making the choice to continue his education at Western Michigan University in civil engineering. After interning with MDOT during college, working on the roads was second nature to Mike. Today he is the president of Action Traffic Mark was the owner of a janitorial business and there were no plans to change that until some of his clients asked to have the concrete at a school polished. A relatively new design concept 16 years ago, Mark said when he got the idea to invest in polishing equipment, there were only a few companies in the entire state of Michigan who specialized in it. Today, Mark has grown his company to employ 14 workers with more growth on the horizon. Chris Holsbeke, Sr. was Mark’s introduction to ABC, and he felt right at home with the

ABC Provides Safety Training to Local Contractors

Michigan, known for its industrial prowess and burgeoning urban landscapes, has always been at the forefront of construction innova tion. However, amidst the rush to erect magnificent structures and pave new roads, safety should never take a back seat. Construc tion safety programs play a pivotal role in ensuring the well-being of workers and the longevity of projects. Let’s delve into the profound benefits these programs bring to the table. 1. Preserving Lives — 5.6 times more likely to get injured in construction than any other industry.
The most fundamental advantage of construction safety programs is their ability to save lives. Con struction sites are riddled with potential hazards, from towering cranes to heavy machinery and precarious scaffolding. Construction safety programs serve as incubators for new ideas and technologies aimed at enhanc ing workplace safety. Whether it’s the integration of wearable tech for real-time monitoring or the adoption of advanced training simulations, these programs drive industry-wide innovation and set new benchmarks for safety excellence. A Mission. A Purpose. A New Perspective Merit Shop Contractor takes first mission trip to Ghana

Tom Deere, the owner of Deere Electric in Tecumseh, MI, never imagined he’d venture outside of the United States, but on a joint mission trip with his son Matt, he returned home with a new found mission for his life. Winneba, Ghana is home to 55,000 people and no hospital. Deere accompanied nine medical professionals on his first mission trip in November 2023. The team performed 45 life-saving surgeries in five days and he kept the team moving by sterilizing the equip ment in between.
“I assisted this incredible team by getting their equipment up and running, and keeping to their schedule even when the power went out,” Deere said. “We needed power inverters to lower the voltage, so I set those up. We also encountered a few times when the power would just go out while they were operating, so I made sure we traveled with headlamps and helped get the power back to the building. I didn’t think my background as an electrician would come into play as much as it did, and that I’d be sterilizing
equipment, but it helped keep things moving.” Deere continued saying as he got older, he realized life’s not just about working. Life needs a mixture of security like a steady paycheck and experiencing what else is out in the world. “I was very humbled on this trip. This was my son’s fifth mission trip and he’s asked me every time to go, so finally I said yes and I’m changed for it,” Deere said. “Experiencing this country, seeing people go years without medical

attention, you realize how little some of your problems are back in America. Don’t get me wrong our government is screwed up, but there you’re either rich or super poor. There is no between and there’s not an option to go from the bottom to the top. It’s where you’re born.” He continued to say that the America Dream is still very much alive. Deere is even more grateful for the opportunity he had in 1981 when he opened his business and was able to work for everything he has in his life. Coming back from this trip, Tom Deere said he has a whole new perspective for how he lives. “We don’t need everything we think we need. The people in that village had a smile each day and they couldn’t tell you where their next meal or clean glass of water was coming from. We
have everything we need to be happy and live a fulfilled life, but it’s never enough. Be kind and treat people with respect. We all deserve to live with equal respect and I’m bringing that into my company,” Deere said. “I’m grate ful for this experience and will continue to do my part making my business, my community and my country better.”

Struggle, Passion and the Ultimate Victory SEMCA students celebrate the start of their professional careers

The path to graduation can include so many obstacles, challenges and opportunities. For some SEMCA students, they’ve been on this path for four years as electrical apprentices. Other students started their journey more recently studying carpentry or welding. Graduation day carries a tremen dous feeling of accomplishment, courage and desire to tackle the future. In his commencement video address, Sean Fisher, SEMCA Board of Trustees Chair man congratulated the 100 plus graduates for making it to this day. “I am filled with immense pride and excitement, for I have the privilege of addressing a group of individuals who have paved the way to become architects of their own destiny. To our graduates, you embarked on this path with a toolbox in hand, a spark of curiosity and a hunger to learn. You honed your skills, cut building materials, wired circuits and made connections,” Fisher said. “You transformed raw materials into functional systems, and in doing so, you transformed yourselves.

The four years did not come without struggle, Stinson recalled, but it was his mind-set and determination that pushed him through. “It’s all about just getting out there and doing,” Stinson said. “Being around like-minded, hard-working people at SEMCA showed me there’s nothing too hard to do in this world. It’s a big change, it’s a big step forward, but I’m just getting started.” Now that he has graduated, Stinson has no plans to stop taking on the industry. He plans to get his journeyman license, get more years in the industry under his belt before becoming a master and opening his own business. “SEMCA provided me with this foundation I can build my life on. I am one step closer to achieving my dreams, and I am ready to go,” Stinson said. Douglas Electric project coordina tor and estimator, Chris Burzycki, originally had plans to become a carpenter, but then decided to switch gears and enrolled in the electrical program. He credits the referral from a trusted mentor for his reason to attending SEMCA, and now that his training program is complete, Burzycki is ready to

get his journeyman license and get going. “We’ve all been doing this for a while, and the past four years provided us with the tools and knowledge for our careers, so I’m ready to do what I have to do to be successful,” Burzycki said. Devin Gostomski recalls walking in on the first day of school start ing his training during COVID. “During COVID was not the best. Doing some days online because of restrictions was a pain and not ideal for someone who wants to work with their hands,” Gostomski said. “At that time, I wasn’t sure if I would make it because it was odd learning about hand and power tools on a screen, but I got through it, we eventually made it to in-person learning and we all worked incredibly hard to make it to this day. I’m just really happy to be here.” The SEMCA Class of 2024 is the largest graduating class in SEMCA history. They have spent time perfecting their craft in the classroom and are ready to take Electrical students Rhomiromar Bruinsma and Rofael Estefanos pose with their certificates from Congressman John James.

The War’s Not Over When The Fighting Stops ABC Member, Army Veteran hosts fundraiser for U.S. Veterans

There have been over 66,000 combat casualties since September 11, 2001. In that same period, 144,000 Veterans died by suicide who are struggling with PTSD. This outrageous stat drove Army Ranger Veteran and ABC Member Pieter Winne to answer the call to help. Whenever you see Pieter, at the beginning of any exchange, he will always share how blessed he is. Winne never has a complaint because according to him, he has it all. A job he loves, a wonderful family and a purpose to help people be better than the day before. “I know deep inside me I am doing what I was put on this earth to do.
Every day in my career (as an EOS Implementer) I help professionals grow. Three years ago, I wanted to know what I could do to help my brothers and sisters who have served this great country and come home with severe PTSD. So, I started hosting what is now an annual fundraiser,” Winne said. Since the inaugural event in 2022, Winne mentioned that the profits raised have exponentially increased. This year the amount almost doubled from 2023 to 2024. In his welcoming speech at this year’s fundraiser, Winne polled the room asking how many have been affected by suicide. In a
silent, chilling moment, almost every hand went up. “So here’s the deal,” Winne contin ued. “This (fundraiser) saves lives. If you know someone, anyone who is suffering, ask them. Life is so short, pour love into them, show them that you care and get them help. We’ve lost too many people.” Bob Sebastian, the president of Helping Out Our American Heroes (HOOAH) attended the event to spread the word about his organization’s mission, which is to lend support to veterans with a high level of understanding, compassion and empathy. “For some reason, us people in the military have it engrained in our

He was hon orably discharged and returned home to his wife and kids. He himself struggled with the return to normal life in Michigan, but with the help from people who care about him and give purpose to his life, he has turned to helping others.
